Paul de Vos (um 1591-1678), Allegorie der ehelichen Treue Inv. Nr. 73 Um 1650, Öl/Leinwand

Der alte Titel, unter welchem das Bild 1803 mit der „französischen Zuweisung" nach Mainz kam, war „Frau im Geflügelhof". Das Halten exotischer Tiere in speziellen Gartenbereichen herrschaftlicher Landvillen war bis zum 17. Jh. in den Niederlanden üblich. Die Vögel schmückten mit ihrem farbigen Federkleid die Parkanlagen oder versorgten als Nutztiere die Eigentümer mit Eiern und Fleisch. Hinter dieser profanen Erklärung des Bildmotivs liegt jedoch ein gelehrtes, kompliziertes Geflecht allegorischer Bedeutungen und die Betrachter hatten damals Spaß daran, dies zu enträtseln: Pfauen, Hunde, Enten, Hühner und Tauben, alle spielen auf die eheliche Treue an.
