The two portraits hanging above the replica Tompion clocks depict Royal Patrons of the Observatory. King Charles II was the Observatory's founder and first Royal Patron. He signed a royal warrant ordering it to be built on 22 June 1675. James II was the Royal Patron from 1685-89. The original portrait, by Peter Lely, is currently in the Royal Hospital Chelsea.
