Panorama of the Union Army of the Cumberland, by William DeLaney Trimble Travis; Panel 1. Farewell to Home and Family, National Museum of American History. The scene, the first of 32, depicts the young soldier's farewell to home and family. Note: Veterans of the Union Army of the Cumberlan believed that General William S. Rosecrans had been unfairly removed from command in 1864. They engaged William D. T. Travis, a staff artist for Harper's Weekly and the New York Illustrated News, to paint a panorama documenting the general's career. Each of the 32 panel-scene is 8 feet high and 16 feet long, mounted on a single roll of canvas over 500 feet long. In May 1865 Travis took the panorama on tour, from 1865 to 1871. |
