Indian husbandwent off to shoot some ducks for the wearytravelers. Mrs. Kinzie gave some ribbonto the little squaws, and took refuge fromthe peering eyes of the tepee flap in thepages of her prayer book. That night the March wind seemed totake its last fling The storm roaredthrough the forest outside, snapping offtrees and setting the woods groaning. Ifthe Kinzies had not found the two squaws,that night would have been their last.The Indians sat round their tepee smokingtheir long pipes. The little squaws scur-ried about cleaning the pots and kettleswith grass. Then the Kinzies went acrossto their own tents, which the guides haderected. Next day the Indian guided them as faras a Quakers, and the Quaker took themforward to DuPages Fork, where it wasnecessary to cut the ice before they couldcross with the canoe. Desplains River,too, was frozen, but shots brought a ferry-man out, cutting his way with an axe.This night they slept in a carpeted house.They were nearing civilization. Twelve

First house built in Chicago—the Kinzie house. Drawn by Mrs. John Kinzie. miles canter across open prairie, and beholda little tavern on the forks of a sluggishriver, at a place called Wolf Point! Kin-zie and his wife dismounted and wentforward on foot. Then a bronzed womancame running from a long, low-latticed,rambling old log house, vociferously wel-coming Messieu John and Missy John.John Kinzie had come home to his own,and his bride got her first glimpse ofChicago! There was the house known as theKinzie Mansion. It stood on the northbank of the river, hidden in Lombardypoplars with two big Cottonwood trees tothe rear. Gardens, bakehouses, lodg-ings for the colored servants and stableslay toward the lake, which was cut off fromthe house by sand hills and cedars.
