The instrument represented as compressing the carotid, in thisfigure, is similar to the one in Fig. 2, Plate V.; it is so constructedthat it may be lengthened or shortened at pleasure. The pad thatrests upon the artery is the same as Fig. 7, Plate V. Fig. 2. Compression of the Temporal and SubclavianArteries. In the first case, the pad is placed directly in front ofthe ear; it may be made of a small roller, or like those in Fig. 13,Plate V. Compression of the Subclavian, represented in this figure,will be better understood by referring to Fig. 8, Plate V.; the smallpointed pad rests over the subclavian, while the others are so placedas to make counter-pressure, and thus keep the artery in place.Bourgery, from whom this drawing is taken, says, This instrumentis capable of compressing the subclavian in all subjects, so as toarrest completely the flow of blood in the vessel.
