37 There, too, we meet with an atrophy and rarefaction ofthe bone elements, when the bend in the spine is so sharpthat we are forced to assume that the normal pressurestresses, at least in the upright attitude, have been con-verted into tension stresses. Fig. 22 is a scoliotic spine sawn in such a way as tolay bare in its dorsal curve, as much as possible, sym-metrical parts of its cancellous tissue both of the bodiesand the transverse processes. For that purpose the sectionshad to be made in different planes as may be inferred fromthe shadow on the concave side of the dorsal curve. As thisshadow on the figure hampered a comparison of the densityof the bone tissue on the concave with that on the convexside, we have photographed the same specimen a secondtime, turning it before the light together with the photo-graphic apparatus, so that convex and concave sidedelements caught the same quantity of light and the shadowwas obviated.^ In this way Fig. 23 was obtained.
