Red Windmill Ruins of the former French Consulate and restoration in Yokohama

Summary[edit]

Description
English: The well from the old French Consulate excavated in Yamate-cho, Naka-ku, Yokohama , and its reconstructed windmill are good reproduction of the early French foreign mission since 1863. It was destroyed by the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake and the 1947 fire. When the French consulate and its official residence were built in 1896 (Meiji 29) by the noted French architect Paul Pierre Sarda, windmills were installed in the French mountain to pump water from the wells. The northern forest, once a French garrison, is now called the French mountain area or French Hill. This land was handed over to Yokohama City in 1971 and made it part of Minato-no-Mieru Oka Koen (Harbor View Park) in 1972. During the construction of the park, four foundations of windmill to pump water from the well were excavated around the park. The windmill replica was rebuilt in a place where the remains of a brick well remain.
