well known that when such great spots occur they arecaused by great cyclonic action, and in all probability the sur-face temperature of the sun is higher when this occurs thanwhen the sun is absolutely quiescent, and it is now known thatthese spots are only dark by contrast with the brighter sur-rounding surface of the sun. It is evidently not fit for humanhabitation. But some of the worlds that are smaller in mass, like theplanet Mars, have cooled off so much that they have probablygone beyond the stage of habitation and have reached a periodwhen life has ceased to exist unless it may be in the equatorialregions of say this planet Mars. The picture I show you uponthe screen gives evidence of a peculiar marking that has beenthought to be works of the Martian engineers in the way of ir-rigating canals. Lowell believes that if they are canals, what wesee is not the canal itself, but the vegetation that grov jponevery side of it, like the vegetation upon the banks of tne Nile.In fact, an object must be about 180 miles wide to be seen by allof the most perfect telescopes we have. Our earth is, so far asknown, t
