English: An excerpt of the Nhân Dân newspaper issue number 1653 of 1958. In it the headline reads that the government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) recognises the People's Republic of China's (Mainland China's) and the Republic of China's (Taiwan's) claims by stating: "According to Vietnamese data, the Paracel and Spratly Islands are a historical part of China's territory." (“theo những dữ kiện của Việt Nam, hai quần đảo Hoàng Sa và Trường Sa là một bộ phận lịch sử của lãnh thổ Trung quốc”.) Lê Đốc (referred to as "Ông Lê Đốc"), acting Director-General for Asia Affairs at Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Quyền Vụ trưởng Á châu Sự vụ thuộc Bộ Ngoại giao Việt Nam), who was also present at the time, added that (cũng có mặt lúc đó, đã nói thêm rằng) "historically, these islands have completely belonged to China since the Song Dynasty." (“xét về mặt lịch sử thì các quần đảo này đã hoàn toàn thuộc về Trung Hoa từ thời nhà Tống”.)
Meaning that at the time, the government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) respected the Chinese claims in the South China Sea, something which the Communist Vietnamese government later backtracked on after relations with the People's Republic of China soured. Note that mere titles (including headlines in newspaper articles) can't be protected by copyright law. (Source). |
