History of the New York Nurseryand Childs Hospital THE work now carried on by the New York Nursery andChilds Hospital, succeeding to all the activities and toall the traditions of the oldest nursery, the oldest childshospital, and the oldest maternity hospital in the City of NewYork, which sent doctors to the homes of the poor at the timeof childbirth, was begun in 1823. The present corporation wasformed by the consolidation of the Nursery and Childs Hospitalwith the New York Infant Asylum, which had formerly consoli-dated with the old Marion Street Maternity Hospital. Each ofthese institutions was a pioneer in its particular line of endeavor. The old Marion Street Maternity Hospital was organized in1823 and incorporated in 1827 as The New York Female Asylumfor Lying-in Women and was so called for the next seventyyears. Its object was: To furnish comfortable conditions andskillful attendance to respectable married women who require anasylum during the period of their confinement, and
