ttempting a sarcastic laugh at theexpense of their vivacious associates, the red-winged black-birds. These birds are also frequently found in companywith the cowbird around cattle, excepting at nesting time.In habits and food they are similar to the redwing, makingthe bird a friend to agriculture. While nesting they feedtheir young each day worms and grubs by the hundreds.During the last five years the yellow-heads have colonizedin several places near Chicago, and appear to increase innumbers annually. They invariably nest in bulrushes orcattails over water. Externally the nests are composed ofstrips of bulrushes; sometimes wild rice and other reedsare used in the composition, with a lining of the samematerial, but finer. Three to five eggs are deposited aboutthe middle of May. The background is pale bluish-white,so thickly covered with specks and spots of hght brownthat we imagine we have found a nest of brown eggs, whenwe first stand up in the boat and peer over the edge of thenest.

MUMFORO, CHICAGO BLACKBIRDS, ORIOLES, ETC. 287 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD The Red-winged Blackbird, or Red-shouldered Black-bird, or Red-winged Starling, inhabits the United Statesand southern Canada, west to the Plains. Abundant wheremarshes and lakes are common, of late years several divi-sions have been made in the geographical distribution of thisspecies, and as a result several sub-species have appearedon our bird list, though the habits and general appearanceis the same in all. The males have a scarlet patch on thebend of the wings, and the females, while not possessingany of the bright effects, are also handsome birds, asstreaks of black, grayish, and white run lengthwise on theunder parts of the female, giving her a pleasing appearance. The call, Konk-la-ree, the last syllable having adrawn-out effect, is the song of the redwing, and, thoughhis attempt at singing is really a failure, the notes are wellin keeping with the dismal swamps and marshe
