Summary[edit]

Description

The National Zoo, located on Massachusetts Avenue, is run by the Smithsonian Institution, and as such, is open free of charge.

The National Zoo was a key beneficiary of China's "panda diplomacy," dating back to 1972, when President Richard Nixon made an unprecedented visit to mainland China, and received a pair of baby pandas, Ling Ling and Hsing Hsing, as gifts. Ling Ling died in 1992, and Hsing Hsing died in 1999. Today, a pair of pandas, Mei Xiang (seen here - 美香, "Beautiful Fragrance") and Tian Tian, on loan from China since 2000, live at the National Zoo.

My only previous visit here was in 1996, when I saw Hsing Hsing in this enclosure (though quite old and sick), and I'm glad to be back and see zoologists make more discoveries about panda reproduction and behavior.

China no longer gifts pandas; from 1984 on, pandas are sent overseas only on 10-year loans, though loans can be extended, and the recipient zoo needs to pay $1 million a year to China toward panda conservation efforts. Moreover, new cubs born overseas from loaned pandas do remain the property of China, and Mei Xiang's cub, Tai Shan, born in 2005, was moved to a panda preserve near Chengdu in 2010 for that reason.
