Português: Este quadro surge referenciado no inventário do Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga como sendo proveniente do Convento da Esperança em Lisboa. Contudo, e como concluíu José Alberto Seabra de Carvalho no seu estudo sobre a proveniência de algumas pinturas da colecção desta instituição, estamos perante um erro de inventariação. De facto, segundo o termo de entrega das pinturas do Convento que vieram a ser distribuídas pela Academia e Museu de Belas Artes, não consta nenhum quadro com esta temática. Assim sendo, há que procurar a sua origem no espólio de outras casas religiosas extintas no final do século XIX. Segundo uma anónima nota a lápis na ficha de inventário desta pintura, o tema nela representado é identificado como "Nascimento de S. João" (Baptista). Para a discussão da iconografia veja-se J.A.
