Summary[edit]

Description
English: Ballot paper of a proposed Austrian referendum on March 13, 1938:
  • Volksabstimmung und Großdeutscher Reichstag; Stimmzettel; Bist Du mit der am 13. März 1938 vollzogenen Wiederverinigung Österreichs mit dem Deutschen Reich einverstanden und stimmt Du für die Liste unseres Führers Adolf Hitler?; Ja; Nein
(Referendum and Greater German Reichstag; Ballot paper; Do you agree with the reunification of Austria with the German Reich on March 13, 1938 and do you vote for the list of our Fuehrer Adolf Hitler? Yes; No').

The Anschluss refers to the annexation of Austria into Nazi Germany on 12 March 1938. In early 1938, under increasing pressure from pro-unification activists, Austrian chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg announced that there would be a referendum on a possible union with Germany to be held on 13 March. Portraying this as defying the popular will in Austria and Germany, Hitler threatened an invasion and secretly pressured Schuschnigg to resign. The referendum was canceled. On 12 March, the German Wehrmacht crossed the border into Austria, unopposed by the Austrian military; the Germans were greeted with great enthusiasm.

The museum existed from 1999 to 2019 and housed a by-reservation-only exhibition of memorabilia and militaria consisting of over 7,000 artifacts, 100 uniforms, books, photos, etc.
