This Achievements of the Administration 11 was a project that had been bitterly fought over in the public arenafor many years past, and was near to the hearts of the people ofSan Francisco. Mayor Rolph promised that within a year from thedate of his accession to office cars would be running upon the )\Iunici-pal Street Railroad tracks. Contracts were immediately let andevery inducement was offered to the contractors to push the progressof their work with all possible speed. True to promise, on December 28, 1912, the GearyStreet Municipal Railway operated its first cars over the line fromKearny street to Thirty-third avenue. \Vith each month additionalcars were brought into service. A campaign had to be waged beforethe people for the ratification of an agreement whereby the cityscars were enabled to reach the Ferry Building over lower Marketstreet. Without the ratification of this agreement long years oflitigation would have made Kearny street the easterly terminus ofthe line. The people, however, overwhelmingly approved of thearrangement that had been entered into, and their wisdom was shownI)y the immediate and remarkable increase in the receipts of the rail-way.
