| Description |
English: The Mohawk Building, once located on Riverside Avenue in Spokane. Built in 1915 by co-owners Mattie White and George Dodson, it replaced the original 1890 Mohawk Block, which was gutted by fire on March 29, 1915. The adjoining Fernwell and Riverside Buildings, while damaged, were able to be restored. While briefly floating the idea of building a new building behind the original façade, they instead opted to construct an all new building. They commissioned Spokane architect John K. Dow for the design and Seattle contractor Puget Sound Construction & Engineering Company would build it. All materials and most of the labor would be locally sourced. The new Mohawk that rose from the ashes was only slightly taller than its predecessor but had 2 more floors. The Mohawk and most of the block was demolished in 2006 and is currently a parking lot. The Fernwell Building, seen on the left, now stands alone on the block. |
