Summary

English: The Mo'okini Luakini Heiau was the first temple built in the Hawaiian Islands. The original temple was built by the High Preist Kuamoo Mookini, in around 480 AD. Some of the large rocks used to construct the Heiau are said to have been transported by foot from the Pololu Valley nine miles away. When the Tahitians arrived in around 1000 AD, the preist Pa'ao ordered the height of the walls to be increased. The temple's walls were only six feet tall in 480 AD, but were built to over thirty feet by Pa'ao. This temple was dedicated to Ku, the god of war, and was a place of human sacrifice.
