Copied for Prince Hossein 'Ali Mirza, Qajar Iran, AH 1224/1809-10 AD

Persian manuscript on cream paper, 67ff. with 12ll. of fine black nasta'liq arranged in two gold outlined columns, headings in red on gold panels with floral illumination, opening illuminated bifolium, preceded by preamble with two additional illuminated bifolia with dedication to Hossein 'Ali Mirza, with seventeen miniatures executed in gouache heightened with gold, accompanying text within gold clouds, final folio with colophon dedicated to Shahzade Hossein 'Ali Mirza, signed 'Ali Muhammad Shirazi and dated 1224, later lacquer binding with cartouches containing pastoral scenes on gold and green glitter ground, light staining at edges of folios, manuscript coming loose from binding Folio 8½ x 5½in. (21.5 x 13.7cm.)

Hossein 'Ali Mirza (1788-1835) was the fifth son of Fath 'Ali Shah. He was the governor of Fars province for 37 years. On his father's death he announced his independence and even minted coins in the name of Hossein 'Ali Shah. Muhammad Shah's army marched on Fars and arrested the self-appointed King and took him back to Tehran, where he died of plague. (Bamdad, M.: Dictionary of National Biography of Iran, I, Tehran, 1966, pp. 438-42.) The scribe 'Ali Muhammad Shirazi died in 1255 (1839-40 AD). Among his recorded works are other manuscripts commissioned by Hossein 'Ali Mirza.
