Description
English: The medusa (jelly) stage occurs in most hydrozoa and scyphozoa. This phase of the life cycle is the free-swimming and sexual phase (when present). Propulsion through the water is achieved by taking water into a central cavity (the gastro-vascular cavity or GVC). Muscles in the bell (medusa) push inward, creating a powerful outflow from the stoma ("mouth") that pushes the animal forward. As the muscles relax, the elastic recoil again brings water into the animal. The classic semicircular shape of the jelly resists forward movement. The shape may inhibit animal’s progress through the water and increases the efficiency of feeding.
