Title
Medieval purse frame hanger
Description
English: A late Medieval copper alloy hanger from a purse bar. This hanger frame is circular in section and is rounded at the top and tapers to a point to form an inverted tear drop shape. This loop has a molding below the point, under which the bar would attach and swivel. This purse loop is fairly large in size, measuring 72.8mm x 33.1mm x 10.1mm, weighing 24.6g. Ward-Perkins (1940) describes this type as a type A, which is assigned to all the large, often similarly shaped purse bars, some of which, however, are made completely from iron. This dates to the late 15th century. For examples see ‘London museum catalogues no.7: Medieval catalogue’ by Ward-Perkins, p.162-6.
