Title
Medieval purse frame (plan and profile).
Description
English: A cast copper alloy purse frame fragment. The purse frame is oval in section and is curved in plan forming a '(' shape. Along one edge there are three integral lugs, each with a central hole. On the opposite edge, near the terminal there is moulded decoration consisting of a transverse groove with a '>' one side of it and '\\' the other. The terminals of the frame are possibly both broken, but they were not broken recently. The surface of the bar is slightly abraded, but has a mottled dark green patina. The bar measures 84.73mm long from terminal to terminal and 9.19mm wide. It weighs 18.77g.

Ward-Perkins in the Museum of London Catalogue (p. 159) comments these frames were not used until the late Medieval period, and illustrates two similar examples (Plate 36) which is dated to the late 15th century.
