Title
Medieval purse frame (front and back view)
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy purse frame, dating to the 15th/ 16th century AD between AD 1450 - 1540 (length: 19mm; width: 72mm; thickness: 11mm; weight: 26.94g), and classified as a type B6, B7 or B8, as stated in Ward Perkins, J, B, 1940, ‘London Museum Medieval Catalogue’, page 167, fig 52 (Perkins states that these three closely related types are distinguished by the form of the boss or central block and the absence of pendant loops).

In the centre of the artefact, there is a flat rectangular central block with a circular drilled hole down the centre of the feature where the shank would have originally been situated (now missing). At the top of this central block, there is a small rectangular depression surrounding one end of the shank hole. To either side of the rectangular central block, the bars (average length: 23.5mm) extend out to the sides, with a semi-circular moulded knob at either end, to presumably restrict the leather fabric (now missing) of the purse to slip of the end of the purse bars. There is no decoration on the purse frame and overall it is in a worn but fair condition with a light brown patina.
