Title
Medieval purse frame, incomplete.
Description
English: Medieval cast copper alloy purse frame, incomplete, late 15th century - early 16th century, Ward Perkins Type A or B. The oval loop is snapped at the top, possibly due to wear; it is now bent inwards on itself; there is a triple transverse collar at the base of the loop, at the junction with the rod which passes through the central boss; there is a spherical bead fixed on the end of the rod to keep the central boss in place. The central boss is trapezoidal with convex lower edge (referred to as shield-shaped in Ward-Perkins 1967); one side of the boss is decorated with three oblique grooves, radiating upwards & outwards from the lower edge (referred to as rudimentary scallop-shell pattern in Ward Perkins); the other side is decorated with an incuse diagonal cross with a vertical groove on either side. The side bars are broken off after the initial sub-circular sectioned projections (the arms would have narrowed at this point). Patchy brown, red & light green surface. Length 53.52mm, width (maximum - across swivel fitting) 35.0mm, thickness across swivel fitting 9.1mm, thickness across loop c.4mm, diameter of top spherical head 8mm-10mm, weight 26.06g. See Ward Perkins 1967 ('London Museum Medieval Catalogue', London HMSO) p.164-9, figs 50 & 52.
