Title
medieval purse bar frame
Description
English: Medieval incomplete copper alloy purse bar frame, of London Museum Medieval Catalogue Type A1 (although it has a rectangular boss), missing part of its arm and arm terminals. One break is ancient and the other more recent. Most of the original patina is missing and one of the arms is bent upwards. The loop has been twisted and is corroded in place at 90 degrees to the arms. It is secured with a round knop below the central rectangular boss, which has niello inlay on both sides, each of differing decoration: one side has two X motifs, the other has two pairs of lines reaching from the bottom corners to the mid point of the top edge, just below the loop attachment. Both arms extend from the rectangular boss with a square moulded collar flanked by two angled (about 45 degrees/ 135 degrees to the arms) collars or wings before becoming circular in section. Height from round knop to top of loop 56mm, incomplete and bent wingspan 71mm. Late 15th/ early 16th century. Cf LMMC, 1940, p.163, fig.50, Type A1.
