Title
Medieval purse bar frame.
Description
English: A cast copper alloy purse bar fragment. The purse bar is sub-circular in section with a sub-rectangular protrusion along a portion of the lower edge. Both terminals of the bar appear to be broken, but not recently as there are traces of the patina on the break. The bar is decorated with pairs of fine parallel grooves forming lozenges. Fragments of the grooves appear to be filled with a black unknown substance. The sub-rectangular plate protruding from the underside of the bar, and integral to it has three holes, one of which is incomplete. These holes would have been stitched to the fabric of the purse. The surface of the bar is abraded and only has traces of a dark green patina. The bar measures 54.93mm long and 11.27mm wide. It weighs 14.7g. The object is one half of a late Medieval purse bar frame. Ward-Perkins in the Museum of London Catalogue comments these frames were not used until the late Medieval period, and illustrates two similar examples (Plate 33) which are dated to the late 15th century.
