Title
Medieval or post medieval purse frame fragment
Description
English: A copper alloy purse frame fragment dating from the late medieval or early Post Medieval period. The fragment is 74.7mm long, 7.1mm wide and 4.3mm thick. It tapers to a point at one end. It is L shaped in section and there is a small circular hole through one flange of the L. This is where a wire loop would have attached the fabric purse to the frame. The other flange is decorated with incised letters which would have contained niello. Only two of the letter can be interpreted: “IN”. Religious inscriptions are quite common on purse frames of this date, as are illiterate inscriptions. The frame probably dates from the late fifteenth century or sixteenth century (Ward Perkins, 1940). It has a dusty green and brown patina.
