Title
Medieval or post medieval purse frame
Description
English: Fragment of a copper alloy purse frame. The frame is curved and ‘L’ shaped in section. One side is decorated with the letters ‘R…ET’ with decorative scrolls and lines between. The letters would be upside-down due to the way the purse would have hung. This decorated side would have presumably been on show. The frame fragment is black with a brown hue in the decoration grooves. It measures 53mm x 7.8mm x 7.7mm, and weighs 7.67g. Parallels for this are PAS records WILT-EF16D5 and SWYOR-94B621, and date this style to Late Medieval – Post Medieval (c.1400-1600AD). The design is also referenced in ‘Medieval Catalogue’ (London Museum catalogues: no.7) page 167.
