Description
English: A cast copper alloy purse bar fragment: In plan the fragment is a '(' shape and has a has an asymmetrical 'V' shaped section. One exterior face is decorated with linear grooves, forming a double-stranded cross hatching. The interior face is shorter than the exterior face and is undecorated. Both terminals of the frame are broken, but these are not recent breaks. The surface of the bar has a corroded surface. It measures 98.1mm long from terminal to terminal, 8.08mm wide and 6.71mm thick. It weighs 25g.

Margeson (Margeson, S. 1993 Norwich Households: Medieval and Post Medieval Finds From Norwich Survey, Excavations 1971-78. East Anglian Archaeology 58) illustrates a similar example, No. 290 which is dated to c. 1650 to 1700. Other frames are illustrated in the London Museum Catalogue (Ward-Perkins, J.B. 1940 London Museum: Medieval Catalogue London ), and are classed as A1 types dating to the late 15th to 16th centuries.
