Title
Medieval Seal Matrix
Description
English: A complete cast copper alloy circular impersonal seal matrix of Medieval, thirteenth or fourteenth century date (c. AD 1200 – c. AD 1400). Length 26.1.0mm, diameter of matrix 18.8mm. Weight 9.73g.

The cone-shaped handle has six distinct facets that form a hexagonal shape in cross-section. It has a quatrefoil-shaped suspension loop with a central quatrefoil-shaped perforation. The suspension loop is divided from the faceted handle by a circumferential collar.

The device of the die is described as if viewing an impression. The device is enclosed within a beaded circle which forms a border close to the edge of the die. This border encircles two square-shaped features, both having slightly concave sides, which together form an interlacing 8-pointed star with evenly spaced points. A hare sejant, facing left, is depicted within the 8-sided central field of the star. Within each angle formed by the points of the star there is a letter forming an inscription. This starts from the top right and ends at the top left and reads: L E G E T E G E (Lege tege: read conceal).

The die is in a particularly good condition although the inscription is not easy to read as some of the letters were not very well formed originally. It has a mid-green/greyish patina. The handle and the suspension loop have a similar patina. However, the surfaces of these parts are pitted overall.
