Title
Medieval Purse (Frame)
Description
English: Late medieval copper alloy purse frame, probably of 15th to 16th century date

The purse frame is fragmentary and both of the terminals have been lost from the bar (with a surviving length of 54.4mm and a weight of 17.7g). The bars are downward turned and of D-shaped section at the break (7.4mm x 4.5mm). Either side of the central block are beasts' heads, simply formed by moulded faceting. The beasts are biting on the emerging bars. The central block is sub-rectangular (9.9mm high, 12.8mm wide and 7.5mm thick) and no decoration survives on either face. The perforation through the block is circular (with a diameter of 3.8mm at the base to 5mm at the apex). The purse frame has two knops protruding from the top, either side of the perforation. The knops are of sub-circular section and gradually widen to the flat-topped terminals (where they have a diameter of 8.1mm and are 18.3mm apart). The surface is partially preserved with a dark green preserved.

The purse frame is of unusual form and does no easily fit into Ward-Perkins (1940, p 162-171) classification. The knops either side of the missing loop are an unusual feature and difficult to parallel, they may have helped to protect the swivelling loop.
