Title
Medieval - Post medieval purse frame
Description
English: Fragment of a late Medieval - Post medieval cast copper alloy purse frame. The frame fragment is V shaped in cross-section and has a slightly curved profile. The curve becoming more pronounced towards one end. One side is slightly thicker and decorated with inscribed pairs of diagonal lines in a criss cross pattern. The other has the worn remains of a hole through it and a second hole at one broken end; the bag would have been sewn to the frame through these holes. It is 59.0mm long, 5.5mm wide and 6.9mm thick; it weighs 10.06 grams.

Ward Perkins (1940:169) suggest metal framed purses become popular in towards the end of the 15th century and drop out of use by the end of the 16th. The pattern of incised crossing lines is common on these frames and often contains niello; no trace of any niello remains on this example.
