Description
English: Mater dolorosa (?). The inscription “…sivit gladius“ quotes the Stabat Mater: “Cuius animam gementem, contristatam et dolentem, pertransivit gladius“ (“Through her heart, His sorrow sharing, all His bitter anguish bearing, now at length the sword has passed“, trans. Edward Caswall). The inscription and the nimbus may have been added during a repair. The iconography (inclined head, linen dress) is inspired by antique Dancing Maenad reliefs.
Français : Vierge de douleur (?). Inscription « …sivit gladius » issue Stabat Mater : « Cuius animam gementem, contristatam et dolentem, pertransivit gladius » (« Son âme gémissante, désespérée et souffrante, fut transpercée d'un glaive »). L'inscription et le nimbe sont peut-être des additions ultérieures, lors d'une réfection. L'iconographie (tête penchée, vêtement en lin) renvoie aux reliefs antiques des Ménades dansantes.
