Description
English: Martha Argerich, Argentine pianist, at Pier 86 (NYC), after having arrived on the liner Constitution. Born June 5, 1941, her aversion to the press and publicity has resulted in her remaining out of the limelight for most of her career. She has given relatively few interviews. As a result, she may not be as well known as other pianists of similar caliber. Despite this, she is widely recognized as one of the great piano virtuosos of our time.

Español: Martha Argerich es una pianista argentina nacida en Buenos Aires, el 5 de junio de 1941. Comenzó a estudiar piano desde muy pequeña con su madre, a la edad de 3 años, y luego con el maestro Vicente Scaramuzza. Dio su primer concierto a los 8 años, interpretando un concierto de Mozart. En el año 1955 el Presidente argentino Juan Domingo Perón envió a su padre como cónsul a Viena para que Martha se asegurase la mejor educación musical posible. Estudió más adelante con Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, y más tarde con Stefan Askenase. En 1957, ganó dos prestigiosos concursos de piano con tres semanas de diferencia. Más tarde, en 1965 obtuvo el primer premio en el Concurso Internacional de Piano Frédéric Chopin. Obtuvo tres premios Grammy, en los años 2000, 2005 y 2006.

På egen begäran reste hon knappt tretton år gammal till Wien för att studera för Friedrich Gulda, och hon blev hans enda elev. Blott 16 år gammal vann hon på två veckor Genève-tävlingen och Busoni-tävlingen. Tjugofyra år gammal vann hon Chopintävlingen i Warszawa 1965. Juryn beskrev henne som "volcanic" och "one of nature's happenings". Argerich har gjort prisade inspelningar av Chopins e-mollkonsert och preludier, Liszts Ess-durkonsert och sonat, Prokofjevs tredje pianokonsert och toccata, Ravels G-durkonsert och "Gaspard de la Nuit". Särskilt hörvärda är hennes tolkningar av Schumanns musik, pianokonserten och hans "Kreisleriana", liksom nära nog all kammarmusik för piano av samme tonsättare.
