Description
English: Reverse of Russian stampless folded letter to Italy. 'MARIUPOL 10 APRIL 1848' two-line cancel, manuscript '24' lira rate (Austro-Italian postage), boxed 'ODESSA 19 APRIL 18..' (T.P.O.) transit, 'TA3' handstamp.

Details:

  • April 10 (Julian) 1848 letter posted. Post office placed handstamp 'MARIUPOL 10 April 1848' postmark at reverse.
Dobin: Mariupol 14.2.08 type 1.04. Postmark used from 1848, Rarity 4.[1]
  • April 19 (Julian) transit in Odessa.
  • 'ODESSA 19 April 18..' boxed postmark applied at front. Transit foreign mail mark, for money correspondence.
Dobin: Odessa 57.1.01 type 1.03. Postmark used 1840-1850, Rarity 4.[2]
  • A transit 'TA3', handstamp was applied in Turin (then Austria) on mail to the Kingdom of Sardinia (which would then have included Genoa). This was short for "Transit Autrichien". T.A.3. refers to the "third price" which is the rate for mail to Sardinia from a number of specific countries including Russia. There were also similar T.A.1. to T.A.5. marks for mail from other countries. [3].

  • May 17 (Gregorian) receiver Genoa '17.MAGGIO' at reverse.
