| Description |
English: This is an uncredited photograph of Fate Marable's orchestra on the S.S. Sidney in 1919. The Sidney was one of Streckfus Steamers Mississippi excursion boats that took people out for single-day (or less) excursions, as there were no sleeping berths for customers. Marable's band played "society" dance music, and he hired ear-trained Jazz musicians like the 18-year-old Louis Armstrong for their "hot" playing and improvising skills, though he insisted they learn to read. Musicians left to right: Warren "Baby" Dodds (d), William "Bebe" Ridgely (tb), Joe Howard (ct), Louis Armstrong (ct), Fate Marable (p), David Jones (french horn sx, mellophone), Johnny Dodds, Johnny St. Cyr (bj). The white man standing behind Johnny Dodds has been variously identified as Captain Joe Streckfus, Captain John Streckfus, or Streckfus operative Carl Mangan. |
