A statue of Maitreya, from Bengal and made some time in the 1100s. On display at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio. This statue is made of silver inlaid with turquoise, copper, brass, and gold. The lotus flower pedestal is bronze, with gold gilt. In Buddhism, a bodhisattva is a person who is able to achieve enlightenment but delays doing so out of a spontaneous, compassionate urge to save others who are suffering. Bodhisattvas are always portrayed as a prince. According to Buddhists, there will come a time in the future when almost everyone on Earth will have forgotten dharma ("the right way of living"). At this time, Maitreya will appear on Earth, achieve enlightenment, and teach dharma to the world. On his head is a small stupa (conical place where the bones of saints are held), which will allow him to recognize the stupa in which the bones of Gautama (the current buddha, or enlightened one) rest. On his shoulder is a pot (kumbha) of amrta, the nectar which imbues one with immortality. Tied around his waist is a khata, a ceremonial scarf symbolizing purity and compassion. This statue of Maitreya is very unusual, in that the bodhi is shown standing rather than sitting, and does not carry a dharmachakra (multi-spoked "wheel of right living", representing the eight-fold path to enlightenment and the cyclicality of existence). |
