Text aus der Chronik von Johannes Skylitzes: "... Es gab auch einen Feldherrn in der Verbannung auf Skyros (sie zählt zu den Kykladen), einen Neffen Kaiser Leons. Der Grund für seine Verbannung war, daß er nach dem Meuchelmord häufig Michael die Tat unter Schmähungen vorgehalten hatte. Diesen konnte Thomas für sich gewinnen, und er vertraute ihm als Strategen ein Festlandsheer von ungefähr 10.000 Mann an. Er brachte auch zur See die Flotte in Kampfbereitschaft und stellte ihr einen weiteren Befehlshaber an die Spitze. Gewissermaßen als seine Vorläufer ließ er die beiden gegen die Kaiserstadt vorrücken, weil ihm ein derartiger Doppelangriff nützlich schien. ..."
