Special instructions | Born in 1787 in Geneva, Gonin lived with her brother, owner of a straw hat factory in Florence, Italy. When this portrait was painted in 1821, she was 34 years old—seven years Ingres’s junior—and engaged to Pyrame Thomeguex, her brother’s business partner. Ingres lived in Florence then (1820–24), and became close to the Thomeguex family. Ingres’s wife, Madeleine, and Jeanne Gonin became close friends. |
