The Lullwater, Prospect Park, Brooklyn, NY, looking south from Binnen Bridge. The white structure off to the left of center is the Boathouse archive copy at the Wayback Machine, a 1905 Beaux Arts structure designed by Frank J. Helmle and Ulrich Huberty, protoges of McKim, Meade, and White and now housing the Prospect Park Audubon Center. To the right is a reconstructed rustic viewing stand (2004), hearkening back to the earlier romanticism of Olmsted and Vaux. The photographer is standing on the Binnen Bridge and the Binnen Falls are just off the lower edge of this image. This is the head of the Lullwater. In the background it curves to the right and flows under the Lullwater Bridge, right of center in this photograph and largely obscured by a copse of trees on the west bank of the Lullwater. This region of the park was extensively restored and relandscaped in 1999-2003 through the efforts of the Prospect Park Alliance. See the Prospect Park Alliance Map[dead link] for more information on park features.
The Boathouse itself replaced an earlier rustic version designed by Calvert Vaux and celebrated by William Merritt Chase's 1887 painting. Boat House, Prospect Park The earlier boathouse was situated on the north end of the Lullwater, and had it been left standing, would have crossed the Lullwater about where the rustic viewing stand is now, largely blocking the middle ground of this view.
