| Description |
English: This scroll, whose beginning is missing, is made of 12 sheets of paper and has retained its original wooden roller at the end. With the exception of the first and last sheets, each sheet is divided into 24 vertical lines of text by faint margins and guidelines. Each line contains 18 characters on average. The writing style suggests that this could be an early manuscript, and Giles dated it to the 5th century (1957, 3277, p.89).
The scroll contains most of Chapter 22, Chapter 23 and Chapter 24 of the Lotus Sutra's Chinese translation by Dharmaraksa. Chapter 22 begins with the characters "[族]姓子雖到彼土 （[zu] xing zi, sui dao bi tu)." Chapter 23 starts on 4th sheet with the title 政法華方等經光世音普门品第廿三 (Zheng fa lian hua fang deng jing Guangshiyin pu men pin di er shi san) and Chapter 24 starts on the 9th sheet with the title 政法華方等經總持品第廿四 (Zheng fa lian hua fang deng jing zong chi pin di er shi san). The Stein site number 'Chien380' was written on the back of the scroll in the twentieth century, after the scroll was procured from Cave 17, near Dunhuang. The numbers '380' in pencil and 'S.6728' were also inscribed later on the brown paper lining added during conservation work. This scroll was conserved and digitised as part of the Lotus Sutra Manuscripts Digitisation Project, generously sponsored by the Bei Shan Tang Foundation. |
