| Description |
English: This scroll has retained its original protective flap, which is dyed in indigo blue and still possesses its wooden stave. The title 妙法蓮華經卷第三 (Miao fa lian hua jing juan di san) is written on the back of this protective flap, indicating that the manuscript corresponds to juan 3 of the Lotus Sutra's translation in Chinese by Kumarajiva. The rest of the manuscript is made of 20 sheets of paper glued together and dyed in yellow, probably using huangbo. Except for the first yellow sheet that is shorter, each sheet is divided into 28 vertical lines of text by margins and guidelines, and there are 17 characters per line on average.
The scroll contains the whole of Chapters 5 to 7. The second sheet of the manuscript (or first sheet dyed in yellow) starts with the title of Chapter 5, whose first characters are now missing: [妙法蓮華]經藥草喻品第五 ([Miao fa lian hua] jing yao cao yu pin di wu). The title of Chapter 6 妙法蓮華經授記品第六 (Miao fa lian hua jing shou ji pin di liu) is given on the 5th sheet of the scroll, line 23; and the title of Chapter 7 妙法蓮華經化城喻品第七 (Miao fa lian hua jing hua cheng yu pin di qi) is written on the 9th sheet, line 24. The end title 妙法蓮華經卷第三 (Miao fa lian hua jing juan di san) is located on the last sheet of the scroll. On the back of the manuscript, the number S.3796 and the Stein site number 82.IV.19 are written. As part of the Lotus Sutra Manuscripts Digitisation Project, tear repairs and infills have been completed using wheat starch paste and toned Japanese paper. This scroll was conserved and digitised as part of the Lotus Sutra Manuscripts Digitisation Project, generously sponsored by the Bei Shan Tang Foundation. |
