| Description |
English: This fragmentary manuscript scroll, of which remain only seven sheets of paper, has been written on both sides.
Faint laid lines for margins and guidelines are visible across the recto, which contains Chapter 25 of the Lotus Sutra's translation in Chinese by Kumarajiva, as indicated in the first line of text: 妙法蓮華經觀世音菩薩普門品第二十五 Miao fa lian hua jing Guanshiyin jing pu men pin di er shi wu. The first sheet is made of a different type of paper and seems to have been written in a different hand. It could be a later addition. Eight partial lines of Tibetan, probably the continuation of the text on the verso, follow the Chinese sutra. The verso contains 188 lines of a Tibetan text about dice divination. These were possibly written by several different hands. The document is heavily effaced and damaged. Five Chinese characters, "等大威神力 (deng da wei shen li)", were written between lines 40 and 41. They seem unrelated to the Tibetan text and are possibly an extract from the following section of Chapter 25 of the Lotus Sutra: "觀世音菩薩有如是等大威神力." This scroll was conserved and digitised as part of the Lotus Sutra Manuscripts Digitisation Project, generously sponsored by the Bei Shan Tang Foundation. |
