| Description |
English: This scroll comprises 9 sheets of fine yellow paper, including 2 fragmented sheets at the beginning and the end. There are margins and guidelines, and each vertical lineof text contains 17 characters on average (up to 20 characters for parts of the text in verse). The manuscript contains parts of Chapters 25, 26 and 27 of the Lotus Sutra translation by Kumarajiva: 妙法蓮華經觀世音菩薩普門品第二十五 (miao fa lian hua jing guan shi yin pu sa pu men pin di er shi wu), 妙法蓮華經陀羅尼品第二十六(miao fa lian hua jing tuo luo ni pin di er shi liu) [title recorded on panel 4, line 25] and妙莊嚴王本事品第二十七(miao fa lian hua jing Miaozhuangyan wang ben shi pin di er shi qi) [title recorded on panel 8, line 1]. The text runs from “[若復有人臨]當被害 (dang bei hai)” in Chapter 25 to “令其父王心趣故其 (ling qi fu wang xin qu gu qi)” in Chapter 27. Interestingly, the text following 令其父王心 seems to differ from the version traditionally spread. The end of the scroll is missing but the few extant characters read “趣故其” when we would expect to find “靜信解”. There are historical conservation patches on the verso of the manuscript. Repeated water damage marks and paper losses can be seen across the scroll. The Stein number Ch.78.VIII.20 and the manuscript number 's.1469' in black and red ink are written on the verso.
