Mae eglwys wedi bod ar y safle hon ers o leiaf c650. Ei enw gwreiddiol oedd Llanferwallt ond fe'i hadwaenir yn Llandeilo Ferwallt er atgoffa pobl ei bod hi'n perthyn i Esgobaeth Llandaf ac nid i Dy Ddewi. Teilo yw nawddsant Llandaf wrth gwrs. Mae'r egwlys bresennol yn dyddio o'r deuddegfed neu'r drydedd ganrif ar ddeg. Mae'r enw Saenneg ' Bishopston' yn golygu 'ffarm yr esgob'. A church has stood on this site since at least c650. Its original name was Llanferwallt (trans. Merwallt's church)but it was changed to Llandeiloferwallt to remind people that it belonged to the diocese of Llandaf (Teilo, of course, being its patron saint) and not to St Davids. Its English name' Bishopston' means 'bishop's farm'. The present church dates from the twelfth or thirteenth century. |
