Summary[edit]

Description

Taken in one of the industrial buildings of The Portland Company in Portland, Maine. I believe this is called a line shaft. The large wooden pulleys were used to transmit power via flat belts to various pieces of equipment. The entire shaft was powered by some sort of power source in this case perhaps an engine of some sort. I do not think they had water power. This type of arrangement became outdated when electric motors were available to power each piece of equipment separately. These wooden pulleys are probably constructed of laminated hard maple. They are beautiful.

The Portland Company is a nine acre industrial site with a commanding location on the eastern end of the waterfront. It was established in 1846 as a locomotive foundry to build railroad equipment for the connection between Portland and Montreal. It was a significant New England medium to heavy steel fabricator until 1978. It had a proud history of serving New England manufacturer's and utilities while building 628 locomotives 160 ships (including Iron Clads), equipment for the Panama Canal and so on. Presently the site has become a marine oriented complex with a small marina, several marine as well as other office tenants and an operating Maine two-foot narrow gauge railroad museum.
