Lilium lancifolium (Tiger lily)

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Tiger lily, Yokohama City, Japan

Lilium lancifolium Thunb. (syn. L. tigrinum Ker Gawl.) Q266317[1], the Tiger Lily is an Asian species of lily, native to Japan, Korea, China, and the Russian Far East. Lilium lancifolium is an herbaceous perennial that grows from bulbs that produce strappy leaves and long stalks yielding colorful, stately flowers in the summertime.

Name Story
Tiger lily gets its name from its flower color, black-colored marks on an orange background resembling a tiger skin. It is one of several species of the lily to which the common name tiger lily is applied, and some regard this as the correct species for the name. Botanists for many years considered L. tigrinum the correct botanical name until it was determined that the older name L. lancifolium refers to the same species as well. However, the so-called Tiger lily is still in use as its common name to this day. The Japanese common name oni-yuri (鬼百合), is mostly now used for the L. lancifolium species. The alternate name, tengai-yuri (天蓋百合, lit. "baldaquin lily"), documented since at least c. 1900, with reference to the double-flowered flowered variety yae-tengai (八重天蓋), has recurred in more recent literature. One cultivar of on-yuri noted in 1900s literature is Kentan (巻丹) which is identical to the Chinese common name.[2]
Popular cultivars
'Flore Pleno', Splendens', 'King Pete'
