Stone day beacons were built on this island as early as the 1500s to guide arriving ships into Helsinki Harbour. The first lighthouse was built here in 1883, it was only 7.3 meters (24ft) high and was too low, so in 1900 it was doubled in height. The 2 stage tower is 15m (49ft) high, a 7.5m (25ft) round cast iron tower with lantern and gallery is centered on a square 7.3m (24 ft) stone tower. The stone is unpainted; the cast iron tower is painted red with a white horizontal band; the lantern roof is greenish metallic. Harmaja is a small island about 10 km (6 mi) south of Helsinki. It is one of many small islands, but it happens to lie beside the main ship channel into the city. The Helsinki pilot station and a tall communications tower also occupy the island.
