Description
Nach der Jahrhundertwende lag ein Schwerpunkt in Liebermanns Wirken bei der Porträtmalerei. Auch Selbstbildnisse, meistens als Maler, entstanden erst jetzt in ansehnlicher Zahl. Für die Darstellung als Maler gab es eine lange Tradition, die variiert werden konnte. In den weniger zahlreichen neutralen Selbstporträts verkörpert Liebermann den gebildeten Großbürger: nahezu immer im Dreiteiler, dazu nach Wahl Fliege oder Krawatte, Krawattennadel, weißes Stecktuch in der Brusttasche, Uhrenkette. Diese Bilder folgen oft in Gestik und Haltung Rollenbildern, wie sie nach 1900 auch die zeitgenössische Fotografie entwickelte. Fast immer ist in Malerei und Fotografie die gepflegte, Distanz wahrende Erscheinung mit einer legeren Haltung verbunden, die das dargestellte Selbstbewusstsein noch unterstreicht.
