Description
English: A Late Medieval copper alloy purse fragment, probably dating to c. AD 1450-1500. The fragment comprises of the attachement end of one of the frames which would have originally been suspended from the bar. The frame is L-shaped in cross section and largely featureless, it has a curving profile, and has an incomplete, flat, perforated lug at one end, following a shallow break in angle. The other end terminates in a worn break.

Dimensions: Length: 27.6mm; width 6.7mm; thickness 6.3mm; weight 3.96g.

L-sectioned frames are typically assumed to be associated with Ward-Perkins' type A purses, which are thought to predate his type B, which themselves post-date c. 1500 (Ward-Perkins 1940: 164-167). Frames with similarly flat attachment lugs dating to the late 15th century are published in the above source (plt. XXXIV, no. 3).
