Title
Late medieval or early post-medieval copper-alloy purse frame
Description
English: Fragment of late medieval or early post-medieval copper-alloy purse frame, now very worn. It is L-shaped in cross-section, with one arm of the L being D-shaped in cross-section and thicker and wider, and the other slimmer and trapezoidal in cross-section, tapering away from the junction with the other arm. The fragment is broken across a circular hole at either end; both holes are in the thinner, narrower part of the frame. The convex outer face of the chunkier arm is decorated with very worn engraving which would originally probably have been filled with niello; the design is of repeating double-strand saltires. Two saltires survive complete, with part of a third.

There is a slight curve along the fragment's length, which is approximately 40mm. The wider D-shaped half of the L-shaped cross-section is 6mm wide, and the depth of the narrower half measured with the thickness of the D-shaped half makes the frame 7mm thick. It weighs 6.22g. Compare SWYOR-D0547D, which has similar decoration; and SUR-5CD912, which is also shown in Williams 2018, fig 3.
